Yes, the stone buildings are impressive for their age, their architecture, their workmanship; the effort and skill that was put into their creation. These were not buildings that were meant to last only 20 or 30 years as so many modern ones are (with the concomitant waste of resources of rebuilding), no, this was quality architecture which was meant to last.
At the time that I took the photo, obviously the tower was the central focus of my shot. But looking back from several months on, my interest is drawn more by the small sign on the right of the image; "Foto".
Yes, as an old style town, it still has an old style photography shop. I did go in there and found a collection of some of the most jawdropping imagery I've ever seen. Of course, it helps that the images were all from the Tuscan area, which has to be one of the most photogenic areas of the planet.
In fact, I do have one of their photos. It doesn't sit in a place that does it sufficient honour; I have yet to find the right place for it. But it's a place where I can see it as I work on my computer. It was taken in this very same piazza, but the building we are looking at is off centre to the left and the fronto of the buildings that are on my right forms the right-hand side of the image. The shot was taken at night, so the piazza was lit by the streetlights of evening under a cloudy sky. The image has been processed in monochrome. It's every bit as artistic as some of the things I've seen on PBase and yes, that is a compliment.
If you are ever in the area and have a love of the art of photography, I do strongly recommend that you seek out this place if it is still around that time.
