'Bigfin Reef Squid,' by Jim Chen

“Bigfin Reef Squid," Waigeo Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, by Jim Chen, Taoyuan, Taiwan. This image was the NBP Winner in the Oceans category.

Says Chen: “Squid are active at night, especially when searching for food. While floating around, they wiggle their tentacles as if going through a vortex. Squid are also able to brighten or darken the color of their body, as seen when illuminated by a night-diver’s light.”

I’ll finish off this gallery with a couple of landscape winners which, while stunning, I didn’t find as fascinating as the wildlife, bird and polar categories.
