Master Pilgrim - St. Stephen's Cathedral

Vienna, Austria

Master Pilgrim or Anton Pilgram (also Anton Pilchramb), a late medieval Austrian (German) architect and sculptor is the author of the organ loft (1513) in the left aisle.

A very interesting and funny story goes with it. While Master Pilgrim was constructing this, his friends would often come to watch him and scoff at him. They told him that as soon as he took down the scaffolding, the loft would fall of the wall and he was only wasting his time. In response to that, Master Pilgrim said "then I will carry it on my shoulders for eternity". So he carved himself at the base of the loft, carrying it on his shoulders!
