From the “Women of Gaza” series by Tanya Habjouqa, born in Jordan and based in Jerusalem: “In a lively portrait, a university student is intent on photographing Habjouqa. Her broad smile, bright red hijab and pink phone against the rich greenery and red flowers contrast with the discreet figure wearing a niqab in the background of the photograph. The vibrancy of the red-scarved young woman contradicts the stereotype of repressed women, and Palestinians in general, in Gaza. Habjouqa describes this young woman, an example of prosperous educated young women who face limited possibilities after graduating from college, as breathless with excitement about meeting someone from outside Gaza.”
