I love it when the UPS driver stops at our house and delivers goodies, especially if they are from B&H. I have been trying to figure a way to get more reach for my 100-400. I thought about trying the 1.4X and 2.0X teleconverters, but they just don't work. For my body and lens conbinations, you would have to use manual focus. That isn't going to work.
Next, I thought about the 5DS R body which is a whopping 50 megapixels. With that size sensor you can enlarge the frame quite a bit and end up with an effective increase in the length of the lens. That would certainly be cool, but very expensive.
Finally, I decided to give the 7D Mk2 a try. The cropped sensor gives the lens an effective 160-640 reach, which I figured would be worth a try. I have read a lot about the 7D Mk2. It has an autofocus which is the best that Canon makes. My 5D Mk3 has a similar system and it is terrific.
My good friend John Cooper has one of these cameras. I asked him about it and got some good information. He mentioned that it was rather large, which is true. It is almost identical to the 5D Mk3 in dimensions and functionality. John also mentioned that it had good image quality. That is what is important to me. There are lots of bells and whistles that I will never use as well.
So after groveling for about a week in front of Ginny, she finally told me to go and buy it if it will make me stop whining. I was excited when it showed up and immediately set about messing with it. I am sure there will be a learning curve, but it won't be so steep because of its similarities to the 5D Mk3. One good thing is that it uses the same batteries, so I already have spares.
Tomorrow I will go out and run it through its paces. I am excited. Ginny is relieved. The peasants rejoiced and peace returned to the realm.
