In the wee small hours of this morning, I finished the last of the planned Windows 10 upgrades. Although they take a long time to do (for me about 4-6 hours, a lot of which is downloading the software). The installation went like a breeze. You get a screen that asks if you want to do a standard installation or a custom one. DO THE CUSTOM ONE. That gives you the opportunity to shut off all sorts of reporting to Microsoft things and other crap that is intrusive.

I was astonished that all my Adobe software made it unaltered. Additionally, the Spyder color calibrations also made it. The only thing that did not run was my VueScan scanning software. I downloaded the version for Windows 10, and things were good again.

One thing that I have noticed is interesting. My computer is an HP Envy 17 inch laptop. I like it a lot. It has had one problem which is overheating. When that happens it shuts down. So far this computer seems to be running much cooler. I have been watching task manager and it seems to consume a lot less CPU time and seems to spin the disks less. This is just casual observation, but I do think it is real.

You still have a day or so to upgrade for free if you wish. I am glad that I did.

I'm going to stick with my XP computer, on which I
do most of my writing and is not connected to the
Internet, and my Windows 7 machine, on which I do
all my photo work. Not sure what the future holds...

Guess I was lucky. My photo club friends
had good experiences as well. Win 7 will
be supported until 2020 I am told.

I tried loading Win 10 on the laptop I take on the road, a Toshiba Satellite C675. A disaster. Half the keys were only accessible if I held down the fn key. No mention of the issues ever cropped up from Toshiba support, nor was there any help. So I reverted to Win 7, where I intend to stay for as long as I use that laptop. I'm looking at a replacement in a year so I should be fine on 7 till then.. I should add that I did load 10 onto my desktop, and it seems fine.

You were lucky John.
Windows 10 put itself on my computer without asking me if I wanted it.
I slowly realised it was not in anyway compatible with my computer or any of the software on it. I really tried to get on with it.
By the time I realised I had to get rid of it my 31 days were up and I am stuck with it.
I use my computer a lot less now, not a lot of pleasure in computing now.
