Monument on the Place de la Norvège in the harbour of Port-Joinville commemorating the sinking
of the Norwegian freighter 'Ymer' in 1917. The monument was erected by the Norwegian government in 1922.
In January 1917, the Ymer, on a voyage from Santander to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore,
was sunk by the German submarine UC-16 ('Egon von Werner'), near Ile d'Yeu. 18 sailors were lost.
7 survivors were picked up by the French Ile d'Yeu lifeboat 'Paul Tourreil'.
Unfortunately, a storm and strong currents prevented the lifeboat to return to Port-Joinville
and she went on drifting to the Northwest for another three days in icy conditions,
passing Belle-Île-en-Mer and Île de Groix.
They finally beached near Concarneau. Another 5 Norwegians and 6 French volunteers died
from exhaustion during this journey. There were 6 French and 2 Norwegian survivors.
