We made a trip to Shaker Village today before setting out to Charleston, WV. This is a photo of one of the communal houses the Shakers used. We knew nothing about this sect and found the interpretive presentations to be very informative. The one thing about the Shakers is that they practiced celibacy. That means, of course, the only way to increase membership in the sect is to recruit new members. Over the last couple centuries that has met with limited success. There are only three Shakers left. They think somebody is about to join, which would increase the number of believers by 33%.
