Mars, 1st May 2016

Loftus, NSW

A nice view of Mars from the 1st. North is to the upper left, with a glimpse of the north polar cap and surrounding dark features Utopia and Lemuria. The blue spot near the top are clouds on Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System, it stands 21km high and 600km in diameter - it is approaching sunset. Elysium Mons is the bright feature at the centre, a mere 14km high volcano. In the lower part is the dark arm of Mare Cimmerium (nearby is Curiosity Rover), and to the lower right of that are bluish clouds around the South Pole. Morning hazy clouds on the lower left cover the Libya Montes.

Best 2000 of 20,000 frames, 200mm f/5 reflector barlowed to f/30, ZWO ASI185MC camera. Pretty reasonable seeing. Processed in PIPP and Registax 6, minor adjustment in PS. full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto
