Plover

These birds are ground dwellers.
The males assist with caring for the eggs.
They have a spur on their legs to assist
with defense.
The nests are usually found in open grasslands.
(Often school playgrounds).
It doesn't take long for people to learn to stay well away.

They look like nice birds, but from the commentary, I'll know to stay away.

Interesting, Elaine. Reminds me very much of the Pacific Golden Plover
of Maui - although they are not so aggressive!

A fine close-up, Elaine.
l've been dive-bombed by these birds when l happen
to ride near where they nesting.
One once drew blood from my neck.
They usually attack from behind so the first one knows
is the thud then they hit you.
