Pelecinid wasp, female (Pelecinus polyturator)

Reveler Conservation Area

An impressive looking wasp, with a long curved ovipositor (not a stinger). These wasps parasitize the larvae of June Beetles. The larvae are the white grubs that eat lawns, so sometimes, when there are lots of grubs under the lawn, you may find quite a few of these wasps helping you get rid of the grubs.

That's one very specialised ovipositor! The hind pair of legs are rather special too - I wonder about function. This is a superb image of the female of the species.
