De Haviland Vampire, first flown in 1944 but not used in WWII. It is the last of some high velocity planes made from wood as well as metal. It flew until 1955 in military service, and 4400 were produced. It could fly at 860 km/hr. It was the first jet to cross the Atlantic and the first to land on an aircraft carrier.
