This caterpillar species seems to be highly variable but I am pretty certain this one is a Saddled Prominent, earlier instar. It has a visitor... a fly that was still on the caterpillar,though underneath it, over an hour later. Possibly a Tachinid fly, one of the parasitic flies that will seek out caterpillars.
