Falling turkeys and broken toes

Well, looks like this is not a good year for feet in the Betts’ family. I spent most of the day in the emergency ward getting X-rays and stiches and bandages because – and I know this sounds hard to believe, and almost comical in retrospect – a 7 kilo (15 pound) frozen turkey dropped on my big toe (the handle came apart) and broke the toe as well as ripping the nail out of place and causing much bleeding.

Just like Tim six months ago, I’m in a wheelchair until I can get some crutches that fit me, so getting around is a bit difficult, to say the least.

I’ll catch up with Pbase after work, which I decided to help out with when I got home around 4 p.m. One thing for sure, I won’t be walking Sahraa for a month or two!

Wow, that was quite an adventure for you. That toe bandage is HUGE! I guess that was to keep you from trying to wear a shoe--not even sandals. Hope things have improved since that event.

Where's the turkey????
gerard belbeoch01-Dec-2015 21:26

YIKES! I completely missed this incident. It sounds awful just to read about it, but to experience it would be horrible. Broken toes are no fun, nor is being in a wheelchair or on crutches. I am so sorry to hear about this.

Ouch! really sorry to see you in A&E, Helen. That must of been a shock and hurt quite a bit! Hope you get it sorted and they fix you up okay. You will have to rest your foot for a while too, I did when I fractured a toe.
Pieter Bos25-Nov-2015 08:52

I'm so sorry to hear of your mishap and all the pain caused by the offending turkey. Sounds extremely painful and I wish you a quick recovery. I think it might be best, at this point, to have someone serve you that turkey.

Oh dear, the hazards of life in the Gulf! Hope you mend more quickly than your unfortunate husband...

Obviously that turkey was for Thanksgiving! A very happy one to the Betts despite that toe!
barbarajoy22-Nov-2015 20:57
So very sorry, Helen!! NOT a good year for feet. Our wishes for a speedy recovery and back on your feet again!! What a good story to relate though - funny except for outcome.
Chris Morton22-Nov-2015 18:21
Oh dear - please excuse wry smile while sending you genuine sympathy and best wishes for speedy recovery
Stephanie22-Nov-2015 17:17
OMG!!!! Unbelievable news but even more unbelievable that you were of sound mind to get this great shot!! V
I broke a toe in1976. Believe it or not, Dr. Toby straightened the toe in the ER and sent me home with pain meds. Hurt like the dickens and I still get twinges of pain from time to time...
Hope you're back on your feet soon!!

Falling turkeys always remind me of "The Turkey Drop" on WKRP In Cincinnati and Less Nessman (Sorry this one landed on your toe!!)
danad22-Nov-2015 16:56
It starts comical (I don't know that you could have rains of turkeys in Saudi Arabia, especially frozen ones) but the end of the story not so much !
Should have been painful !!!
We wish you a fast recover Helen !
Ton T.22-Nov-2015 16:33

Oh my God... that's awful. I really feel for you, Helen. And that you were trying to make a 'normal' Thanksgiving and now you're hurt, its funny and sad... but mostly sad. I hope you'll recover quickly because I look forward to your adventures. Maybe we'll see some archived photos while you recoup?
Milan Vogrin22-Nov-2015 16:24

Carol Rollins22-Nov-2015 16:24
Oh Helen! What bad luck. Hopefully you will heal well and quickly.
(It doesn't sound as far fetched as you think - I once did that with a large frozen ham. But,
I was lucky not to end up in emergency). Take care my dear friend, and have a good
Thanksgiving.
bill friedlander22-Nov-2015 16:17
