Total Lunar Eclipse During Lunar Perigee 9/27/2015

Lunar perigee occurs when the moon is at the closest point to the Earth in it's orbit. The newly popular term for this is "Supermoon". The total eclipse is caused by the Earth's shadow falling on the moon. The reddish color results from light diffracting around the earth, resulting in the term "Blood Moon", or "Hunter's Moon".

There will not be another total lunar eclipse during perigee until 2033.
