Pennsylvania leatherwing (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus)

Reveler Conservation Area

Also called Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, reflecting both the family this beetle belongs to (Soldier beetles) and the plant it is most often found on, as here, goldenrod (Solidago). The larvae of this beetle, according to Bug Guide, eats locust eggs, and other insect larvae, particularly cucumber beetles.
