Pink-shaded Fern moth caterpillar (Callopistria mollissima), #9631

Mer Bleue area

This was found on a bracken fern which is the primary food source forboth fern moth caterpillars. Lack of a white stripe down its back indicates it is the pink-shaded fern moth caterpillar which is almost identical. Thanks to Bug Guide for confirming this.

The caterpillar's segmentation and patterning fit perfectly with the frond's segmentation; I imagine this makes for great camouflage but you've sure drawn attention to it.

There is such amazing variation in this caterpillar world, and you always capture it beautifully. This looks like it's part of the leaf, or a creature with some very interesting feet! V.
