Interpretive signs tell us that the foothills are home to the widest variety of California's plant and animal species, and that Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks protect the largest acreage of this habitat. And yet...the other side of the coin is that this ecosystem is adapted to regenerate via periodic fires, but we have suppressed fires here for over a century. As in so many other instances, we are probably loving our foothills to death.
