We headed for the Oregon coast today with a stop in Corvallis for a very nice lunch. Ginny's Oregon State University advisor Dr. Joe Nibler (top left) and her chemistry mentor Dr. Ken Hedberg (bottom right) joined us. It was a very nice lunch and we were very fortunate that these people could be there. We ate at a brew pub that featured the usual types of beers. One was named Linus Pauling Ale. If you remember Linus Pauling, he is the only person to ever win two undivided Nobel Prizes, Chemistry and Peace. He also became famous for advocating Vitamin C as a cure for the common cold. Anyway, he got his undergraduate degree at Oregon State. As Ken was reading the beer menu he noted that he was amazed they had a beer named after Pauling. He was a student at Cal Tech when Pauling was there. He said, "This is clearly wrong to name a beer after Pauling. I knew him well and he would drink nothing but vodka!"
Interesting side note. Check out footnote 4 in the following reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selenoyl_fluoride
