Coral fungi

Reveler Conservation Area

There are many types of coral fungi, and often they are found on rotting logs such as this one, but many also grow on the ground. George Barron, in his guide to Ontario mushrooms says that as a group, coral fungi are "often difficult to identify to species and sometimes even to genus" because distinguishing features can only be told by the use of a microscope. This may be in the genus Clavicorona, a very common genus.
