Robber fly (Laphria)

Reveler Conservation Area

This is most definitely a bumble bee mimic! It even buzzes like a bumble bee as it zooms past. But it is truly humongous, like a bumble bee on steroids. It has a poor stag beetle (no small creature itself) as its prey. These flies are harmless to humans.

Such an interesting looking mimic! The detail is excellent, and your timing was perfect. I have to feel sorry (!) for the poor scarab beetle. V.
