HAYNES DESCRIPTION:
Chrysler Plymouth Prowler was designed to pay homage to the custom machines of the 1950’s and ‘60’s. At its launch, Plymouth stated that the prowler was a development of the Dodge Viper and was the next step in the process of developing new methods of manufacture and assembly to lower the cost of producing each vehicle. It became an experimental vehicle that tested advanced methods of assembly such as aluminum and composite bonding. The Prowler was undoubtedly a styling departure for the company, and succeeded in attracting levels of publicity for the range for which it could hardly have dared hope. The styling behind the Chrysler PT Cruiser is said to have been inspired in part by the Prowler. The Prowler is credited with starting the retro trend that other manufacturers have since embraced with the production of various ‘throw back’ designed styles. Available originally only in purple they had a choice of two engines, a 3.2 litre V6 and later a much more powerful 3.5 litre V6 as fitted to this vehicle. Only 11,702 were made between 1997 and 2002, most of them sold in the United States of America. A few more were sold in Europe but they are rarely seen on the roads in Great Britain.
