He went to Canada to attempt to have the confederate conspirators extradited back to the US. These attempts were unsuccessful.

Moved his company to Hull, Quebec in 1854; by 1856 Eddy Match Company was one of the largest match companies in the world and he added other wooden items to his product line. In 1886, he established the E. B. Eddy Company.

In July of the same year he was appointed to the staff of General William F (Baldy) Smith; In Oct. he was promoted to Major and transferred to the 5th Vermont Infantry; In October 1862 he was promoted to Colonel of the 15th Vermont Infantry; Colonel Proctor participated in the Gettysburg Campain.
