Essaouira is an enchanting city on the Atlantic coast, first settled by the Phoenicians in the 7th century B.C., then used by the Romans as a center for the manufacture of purple dye in the 1st century B.C., then occupied by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and finally with a town built on the site in 1760 by an Alaouite sultan. It’s popular today with artists and independent travelers, and was a marvelous place to spend some of the last days of our tour of Morocco, with a great medina and a very lively fishing port.
