The Chevrolet Impala first appeared in 1958 as the upmarket version of the Bel Air Series. It was available in hard top or convertible form, with the option of six cylinder or V8 engines. Over 600,000 were sold during its first year of production and by, 1964 output had risen to 889,600 per year making the Impala Detroit single most popular model, with the best sales record in a decade. Although the body styles were restricted to hard or soft tops, all manor of options were available. The largest capacity engine available was the 425hp V8 making the Super Sports versions of the Impala, the best performing car in the history of the company.
