HAYNES DESCRIPTION:
This amazingly advanced straight-eight engine develops 245h.p. from its 420cu. in. capacity. Its eight pistons and cam-rods are made from unusually strong heat-treated aluminium alloy. Its crankshaft is of double heat-treated steel alloy statically and dynamically balanced and fitted with counter-balancing weights. Two overhead camshafts are mounted in five bearings in a detachable cylinder head, with the cams acting directly on the valves. There are four valves per cylinder for high efficiency. The large exhaust manifold is finished in heat-proof green enamel to match the engine block. It feeds a 4.75in diameter exhaust pipe running into a 6.5x5.4in silencer which gives good silencing with minimum back pressure. Transmission has three forward speeds and reverse. All gears and shafts are made of the finest alloy steels and the casing is of heat-treated aluminium. This car was originally owned by Mrs. Payne Whitney (Pratt & Whitney) and latterly by Otis Chandler, owner of the Los Angeles Times newspaper.
