Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)

Praia da Varandinha, Boa Vista, Cape Verde.

Sadly one of the last two Magnificent Frigatebirds in the Eastern Atlantic. A tale of steady decline since David Bannerman and WRP Bourne's visits in mid Twentieth century. Only 12 pairs remained by 1969 and that is now down to 1 or 2 individual females. I saw this bird at Praia da Varandinha after seeing it or another the day previously at the stakeout over Ilhéu de Curral Velho. Some social media commentators have trivialised the decline of this bird stating the population were storm blown vagrants in recent history i.e. the last 20 years or so. This is not correct and this once natural population recorded by the above and previously by others is now on its knees. A very sad reflection on further demise of the planets avifauna, thankfully of course the Man-o'-war bird is still a common sight in the tropics of the Western Atlantic.
