Mourning cloak wing

A butterfly in winter! Well, sort of... this is the wing of an overwintering mourning cloak butterfly. This species hides under loose bark or in cavities or other secure spots and hibernates as an adult for the winter. But here the bark had been ripped from an old birch and I am surmising that something ate the body of the butterfly, leaving only one wing.

What a cool find! From the thumbnail it almost looked like a Cedar Waxwing plowed into a tree!
