Chapel Of St. John

Wieliczka, Poland

The chapel of St. John, built in 1859. In 2009 it was moved from the first level to the third, and is now a part of the tourist route.
At 135m below ground, this is the deepest level of our tour.

This chapel has a beautiful wooden interior, which is rarely seen in the mine, as the Krakow Saltworks Instruction of 1743 prohibited the use of timber equipment, because it could become a source of fire.
A small semicircular wooden arch is carved into a niche in the cavern's wall.
The most valuable monument of the chapel is the 18th c. statue of the crucified Christ, transferred here from the Lipowiec Chamber, to save it from destruction.
