Earthball (Scleroderma sp.)

Reveler Conservation Area. When I checked an old nest in a sapling in the woods, this earthball fell out. Red squirrels, chipmunks and mice will often store food in an old nest in autumn and winter. This fungus was likely much too big for a mouse to handle and I've no doubt a red squirrel hauled it up there and then left it.
