In 1880 the railroad arrived in what is now Rayne, bypassing the older settlement of Pouppeville. Several of the businesses from the later moved to along the railroad route, and the new town of Rayne was created.
This is the home of one of those visionaries, Joseph Bernard, who built his home in 1881 in the new town. In 1999 the house was in danger of demolition and was moved to a new location neat I-10.
The house is listed on the National List of Historic Places.
