One of five salt domes along the Louisiana coastline, Belle Isle is only accessible by boat. In March of 1968 an explosion and fire killed all 20 workers inside the mine. Again in 1979 another explosion and fire occurred, this time there were survivors, but 5 more workers lost their lives.
This monument is a memorial to those men. It is located adjacent to the Cajun Country Visitor Center near Franklin on US 90
