Workshop: "Back to Basics: Photography using a Tripod and Prime Lens"

Twenty-four photographers met in Balboa Park this morning to practice photography using prime lenses on tripods with manual camera setting and manual focus.
The idea was to slow the process of composing images down and make photographers be more deliberate and thoughtful when making images.

I took this photo using a seldom used Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D AF with a timer. I am on the far left.

Walter you have to be applauded for passing your photographic knowledge on to the next generation. I am sure the group enjoyed the event and went home far wiser for the experience.

Well set up for the group photo. You were able to run in and be recorded also I see. The task is an admirable one. we rely too much on cropping and digital manipulation. (nevertheless after doing what this group did for over 50 years I take advantage of todays methods)

Such a joyous and enthusiastic group of photographers (particularly the far left section:)), the idea of making mature images with less click and more preparation in mind is welcomed, as is the using of primes. V

Wow, it reminds me of the 'old days' when we used to take a roll of 24 slides, no more. You had only 24 shots to take, making each and every one count. It forces you to see your image BEFORE you took it, you had to compose it, frame it, each aspects were calculated ... I ALWAYS kept one, a last shot sort of thing ... often this last one was THE keeper as we used to call it! LOL Glad you all had a great time and nice meeting you all.

a return to prime time can only be applauded...relying on zooms compromises clarity at least...as for tripods, invaluable in low light, and arguably the best approach no matter what the time of day...what a sympathetic group here too...it would be good to join in with them someday...cracking image Walter..
