A striking bit of topography. I'm driving the road numbered 623, which enters as a twisty dirt road from
the southeast and exits as a twisty paved road to the north. The northern exit of the valley has a stream through
it, so it's not a true cove (a valley with no water outlet) like you see in Tennessee. Still, when you're there
you're aware of being in a bowl surrounded - protected, it feels like - by mountains on all sides. A remarkable place.
The big ridges that leave the map at lower left become Clinch Mountain, which extends for dozens of miles
to the south-southeast. After leaving the Garden I followed Clinch Mountain for the rest of the day.
