More than 100,000 people live in refugee camps along the remote border between Thailand and Myanmar. They are escapees from a decades-long civil war between Myanmar's government and minority ethnic groups in the country's north and western flanks. Over the last three years Myanmar's military rulers have opened up their isolated state to the world and promised a general election in 2015. But in the border regions the situation remains grim. The military presence in the area is substantial and the challenges for refugees are intractable.
