Adieu, Imperial Beach, California, 2014

The sheer scale of this particular wave dwarfs this vanishing surfer as he bids farewell to this run. The wave abstracts his entire body. We see only a shadow of the body, his arm, and his upraised gesture of futility. The luminous green wave is striking in its power and size.

Yes, "hands up" gesture is a universally understood symbol of surrender. It derives, of course, from showing a captor that you are unarmed. In this case, however, the hand in the air gesture not only symbolizes his surrender to the power of nature, but also a gesture of farewell. He vanishes into the wave, and only one hand is left to say goodbye.

He is certainly overcome by the apparent enormity of this wave. The emerging hand seems to be surrendering to its power.
