Futility, Imperial Beach, California, 2014

In photographing a sport such as surfing, it is important to continue making images even though a surfer may have already failed. Many of the surfing images I made at Imperial Beach express the sense of futility following a disastrous run. This is one of the most eloquent. This surfer already has fallen off his board and is virtually invisible. We only see his hand emerging from a surging wave. Just as important, his board rises from the sea, echoing his absence. Meanwhile, I fill the frame with a double dose of massive waves, expressing the power of nature over man.

I am so glad you notice the underlying symbolism and metaphor in this and many of my other surfing photos, Iris. It is indeed all about the interaction and interrelationship between man and nature. In this case, nature has gained the upper hand (pun intended) and his gesture confirms it.

Even though he got bested by this wave, I doubt that he views this as an exercise in futility. While his failure may be frustrating, I think he will emerge from this wave and try again and again until he masters it. I like not only what this image says about surfing, but also what it says about man's interaction with nature.
