Hover fly (Sericomyia militaris)

I always enjoy seeing the hover flies that mimic wasps and bees. It is clear to see that this one, with its pattern and colour is emulating a bald-faced hornet. There are other hover flies (Syrphidae) who are much better wasp mimics, but when this one flies by all one sees is the black and white colouration and the only other common local insect with those colours is a hornet!
