We were driving back to Reykjavik from the falls at Gullfoss when we saw a huge cloud of dust ahead of us. It turned out to be a herd of Icelandic horses being driven back to their stable (their two handlers were at the very back of the long line) – there must have been at least 100 horses in total -- these are only a fraction of them. I was just thrilled to see all of them running free out in the open, a bit below the roadway.
We pulled over, and I crossed the highway for a closer shot of them when suddenly some of them started coming towards me. I didn’t want to be responsible for some mass detour onto the highway so I ran back to the car, but the horses followed me. Quite frankly, I didn’t know what to do with all these horses coming in my direction, but then they veered away from me and continued down the middle of the highway, of course blocking traffic in the process. Some drivers tried to nudge them off the road, but the horses didn’t want to go back to their mates so trotted back home on the asphalt. It was all a pretty amazing experience and one of the highlights of my stay in Iceland!
