Confused woodgrain (Morrisonia confusa), #10521 ??

Reveler Conservation Area

This fat caterpillar was hiding in a leafy shelter in a bitternut hickory sapling. It may be the Confused woodgrain caterpillar. If so, in its final instar it turns an orange-brown colour, and in its middle instar is very different, with red spots along its body.

The contrasting colour of the head gives this a slightly human feel (that's very anthropomorphic, I know) as it peers out of its shelter (though it probably can't "peer" at all!). Great photo.

Fascinating to see it with its home. A view into another world. "V"
