This impressive looking wasp is common from mid-summer through to autumn. What looks like a long stinger is NOT! That is the ovipositor with which the female deposits her eggs. These wasps CANNOT STING! In fact, they are very beneficial for they are parasitoids of june beetles, those insects whose grubs cause the lawns to turn brown. If you have an infestation of the beetle larvae (grubs) you might find these wasps trying their best to control the population! Males are much smaller and are rarely ever seen.
