Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Copyright © Lewis Scharpf

Papilio glaucus
Light Phase Female
Opelika, Alabama
Note: For further information on the differences between
the female light and dark forms see: http://nhpbs.org/natureworks/easterntiger.htm
Dark females can range from dusky to nearly black but in most cases a "ghost" tiger
pattern is clearly visible on the undersides of the wings. Dark FEmales resemble
Spicebush and Black Swallowtails but lack the inner band of orange spots on the
undersides of the hind wings.
