The remains of the original ship Batavia, wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in 1629, were discovered in 1840 by Captain Stokes of The Beagle. It was not until 1979 that some of the canon, the anchor and some timbers were salvaged and some are now in the Geraldton Museum in Western Australia. Other salvaged remains are in the Fremantle Marine Museum.
The wreck site is a premier dive site off the coast of Western Australia.
