This 20th replica is of the ship built by the East India Company in 1628. It has 24 cast iron canons. The original ship was wrecked in 1629 off the coast of Western Australia on its maiden voyage. An historic mutiny and massacre occurred among the survivors.

In 1999 the newly built Batavia was transported to Australia by barge and became the flagship for the Netherlands during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It was returned to Amsterdam in 2001.
