1944 - 2014 Glory to the Heroes!
70th Anniversary of Warsaw Uprising.

On Aug. 1, 1944, thousands of poorly-armed young city residents rose up against the German forces to try to take control of Warsaw ahead of the advancing Soviet army. They held on for 63 days in the cut-off city before being forced to surrender. Almost 200,000 fighters and civilians were killed in street fights and in German bombings. The Nazis expelled the survivors and set the city ablaze.

The Polish flag, emblazoned with the Kotwica, was an unofficial flag of the Armia Krajowa and the Polish Secret State.
The Kotwica (Polish for "Anchor") was a World War II emblem of the Polish Secret State and Armia Krajowa (Home Army, or AK).
PW means the phrase Polska walcząca, "Fighting Poland", Polish scouts from sabotage groups were painting this symbol upon walls of the city during the WW II.
