On the foreground: The cenotaph sarcophagus of Çelebi Sultan Mehmet I. The calligraphic inscription on the tiles is four sentences long, sings the praise of the sultan, names his father and grandfather and gives the date of his death (May 1421).
In the background: The sarcophagus of his daughter Selçuk Hatun (1407-1481). She had been given in marriage to Ibrahim Bey, a son of the Çandaroğulları Ifendiyar Bey (who was the ruler of a Beylik/Principality centered around Kastamonu and Sinop, North-Anatolia). The Beylik was annexed by the Ottoman: partly in 1398 (Kastamonu), and completely in 1461 (Sinop). During her long life, Selçuk Hatun became an important player on the Ottoman political scene; she is said to be the first woman in Ottoman history to have been charged with official diplomatic assignments.
