Shah (Imam) Mosque And Naghsh-i Jahan Square

Esfahan, Iran

The Shah Mosque known as Imam mosque (after the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran) and Jameh Abbasi Mosque is a mosque in Esfahan, Iran, standing in south side of Naghsh-i Jahan Square.

This mosque was built by Shah Abbas 1st during the Safavi period. It is recognised as one of the masterpieces of Persian Architecture and is registered, along with the Naghsh-i Jahan Square, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its splendour is mainly due to the beauty of its seven-colour mosaic tiles and calligraphic inscriptions.

Its construction began in 1611 by the chief architect of urban planning Shaykh Bahai and completed in 1629.

Great capture of a striking mosque. Too bad they had a scaffolding on the dome, but still beautiful. V.
