Circular Quay, originally
known as Semi-Circular Quay (because of its shape) was used mainly for shipping
and has continued, in this vein, to become a “hub” for transport (ferry, rail and bus,
and earlier as a terminal for horse-drawn and electric trams). Sydney Opera House
is built on the site of the Fort Macquarie Tram Depot which was demolished in 1958.
