Snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

This small snapping turtle was trundling across the trail at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, heading for the Amphibian Pond. This was a little one, the carapace perhaps 6 or 7 inches, but they can grow to a good size, though it takes them a long, long time to do so. As for how long these rather prehistoric creatures live, nobody really knows, but hundreds of years has been put forth as a possibility. They are a species of special concern in Ontario.

Saw one of these guys last summer while out walking with the dogs. My dogs stayed away but my friend's dog got a chunk of her nose taken out. That tail is amazing looking! V

Nice capture. You stayed away from the "business end"! :-) I think they're pretty common here. Interesting little is known about them.

They are from the dinosaur age - so old looking even when a youngster. - great sharp photo.

Even by the standards of turtles this is a remarkable and prehistoric-looking creature. The tail clinches it.

it may well be glad to reach the pond, encrusted with so much earth...I remember these from boyhood in Ontario, and always kept a respectful distance..

LOL... we have many, many Snapping Turtle here. Once, there was one crossing the road that was as big as a car tire. We tried to "hurry" him along before he got hit. A man used his closed umbrella to prod the creature and it bit the end (metal and all) off. We finally got him off the road.
