This is a prayer carpet with a compass attached to indicate the direction of Makkah (Mecca). My guess is that it’s pretty useful for travelers when there is no mosque nearby at prayer time. This picture was taken at the airport in Jeddah, through which all pilgrims coming by air and going on the annual Haj or on Umrah (a lesser Haj that can be performed at any time of the year) pass. They even have a special Haj terminal, which is enormous; I understand that between 2 and 3 million pilgrims come to the kingdom every year to perform Haj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
